About Passage to Thimblemill

Passage to Thimbelmill is a Countershade CIC National Heritage Lottery Fund cultures and memories project, which captures and celebrates hidden stories from diverse cultural backgrounds around Thimbermill library in Smethwick, Sandwell.

We engaged with a wide range of people celebrating diverse cultures, with participants who do not normally have opportunities to take part in projects.  People have helped to create a heritage story space engaging diverse perspectives about the journey to ‘home and ‘sanctuary’, to make a story-telling tent, where they can share these stories. A place to connect people: where people can learn about one another’s heritage. The tent and stories have been given to Thimblemill Library and the library archives centre.

This is a hidden heritage project where we will create a new archive of diversity community memories to draw the communities together.  It is important to us and our community to counter intolerance and social segregation. This activity will enable a greater understanding across cultures, to counter intolerance and isolation and appreciate the contributions diverse cultures make together to create living heritage. People in our community are not always aware of the benefits a wider cultural universe of communities make and the resulting prejudice causes suffering.

All our stories are being passed onto Thimblemill Library and Sandwell Community History and Archives Service at Smethwick Library.

We would like to thank all the national lottery players without whom this project would not have been possible
